Loose dentures can cause discomfort and lead to painful sore spots. The constant movement and pressure they exert on the gum tissues and the underlying bone may also contribute to gradual bone loss over time. As the dentures shift, they create friction that can irritate sensitive areas in the mouth, making it increasingly difficult to wear them comfortably. Ensuring a proper fit through adjustments or relining can help prevent these issues and maintain long-term oral health.

To maintain their shape, keep your dentures from drying out. Always store them in water or a denture cleaning solution when not in use to prevent dehydration and warping.

It is important to clean your dentures thoroughly every day, both on the inside and outside, using a soft, large nylon brush designed specifically for dentures. Regular toothpaste should be avoided, as its abrasive ingredients can create tiny scratches on the surface, which may lead to staining and bacterial buildup over time. Instead, opt for a specially formulated denture cleaner or cream to gently remove debris and plaque. After brushing, be sure to rinse your dentures well with cold water to eliminate any remaining cleanser and keep them fresh for daily use.

Regularly check your dentures for signs of wear, such as worn-down teeth. Since your mouth continuously changes, routine checkups are essential to maintaining a proper fit. Be sure to visit Breton Denture Centre as part of your scheduled maintenance plan.

Consult your denturist to determine which medications are safe for you, as certain prescriptions can affect the way your dentures fit and feel. Changes in gum tissue or saliva production caused by medications may lead to discomfort or looseness. If you experience any issues, avoid attempting to adjust your dentures on your own, as improper modifications can cause damage or worsen the fit. Only a qualified denturist or dental professional has the necessary expertise to evaluate your oral health and make the appropriate adjustments to ensure your complete or partial dentures remain comfortable and functional.

Most dental insurance policies will pay for a new denture every five years.

Proper denture care is essential, as worn-out or discolored dentures can affect both your appearance and overall oral function. When dentures become stained or deteriorate over time, they may not fit as well, making it more difficult to chew and speak comfortably. Additionally, poorly maintained dentures can contribute to an aged look by altering facial structure and reducing support for the lips and cheeks. Regular cleaning, routine check-ups, and timely replacements will help ensure that your dentures remain both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
